we've put the idiots in charge
and their copyeditors are even stupider. look at this horeshit:
I've had the TSA's experience and training leveraged at me when they searched and swabbed my bags, alerted by but never actually opening the container of my electric toothbrush.
"We must treat every suspicious item the same and utilize the tools we have available to make a final determination," said Federal Security Director David Wynn. "Procedures are in place for a reason and this is a clear indication our workforce is doing a great job."
Brilliant! They're proud of this bullshit! Treating everything the same when it sets off the suspicions of some uneducated dumbass who can't tell the difference between a battery charger and explosives -- and whose dumbassery is then enforced by people who presumably do know the difference -- is really not the way to make anyone safer. But we have to treat any potential threat the same, whether it's a bottle of water, 3.1 ounces of hair gel, or a battery with a wire attached.
of course schneier nails it: "the public" doesn't know what a bomb looks like, they know what a movie bomb looks like, which is to say, a jumble of colorful wires and bits of metal. we're protecting against science fiction.
